One of the most interesting jobs in the art field is that of tattoo artists. Their job can consist of working with clients to design tattoos on paper, using tattooing equipment to transfer the design on to their clients skin, and choosing the correct color combinations to create the desired effect. Becoming a tattoo artist required an in-depth knowledge of art and design, developing drawing skills, cultivating your own style, finding a mentor, and completing an apprenticeship. Although it is not required, it is generally suggested that tattoo artists receive formal training through an art school; this helps them to improve their craft and allows them to practice creating art for a wide variety of applications. Learning the basic elements of art is also essential to becoming a tattoo artist, as color theory and line work play a huge role in how tattoos turn out on the client. Having a good mentor is also extremely important; before becoming a licensed tattoo professional, having an apprenticeship is a requirement. This means that people work for their mentors or for tattoo shops that offer apprenticeships in order to gain experience before being allowed to tattoo people on their own. Apprenticeships also provide valuable insight into the process of designing tattoos, operating a tattoo machine, and sterilizing tattoo equipment and other hygienic practices. Becoming certified also requires learning about safety codes and health guidelines, and many tattoo artists are required to be trained and certified in CPR in order to gain their license. In addition to being able to draw and tattoo a design for a client, tattoo artists also need to be able to advise their clients on the correct way to take care of themselves after getting the tattoo done. Tattoo artists can really attend any art school prior to their training, and they also want to find schools that offer training or programs in CPR and bloodborne pathogens. Being a tattoo artist seems like an incredibly interesting profession, and it allows both the artist and the client a way to express themselves.
