Lisa Yuskavage is an American artist who is known for her highly original approach to figure painting that has challenged conventional understandings of th genre. She received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her MFA from the Yale School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut; Yuskavage currently lives in New York where she continues to make her groundbreaking work. Her pieces utilize a painterly technique that evoke art historical precidents while simultaneously implementing motifs that are often inspired by pop culture.
Since the early 1990s, Yuskavage has been associated with the reemergence of the figure in contemporary painting. Her work is a combination of mixed subliminal messages, intricately chosen colors, and sexual undertones. The nude is one of Yuskavage's main focuses throughout her work, as well as creating landscapes that blur the line between viewer and subject. Many of her pieces show women in art studios or painting, and these are often associated with psychologically driven theories are viewing, such as that of the gaze. Yuskavage's pieces have been highly praised for their ability to display the dichotomy between high and low, sacred and profane, and harmony and dissonance. Both the characters and the settings of her paintings create such a unique feeling, forcing the viewer to consider the entire scene and the way they interpret it.

Similarly to my awareness post about David Bromley, what really drew me to Yuskavage is her incredible use of color. Every single piece feels absolutely unreal, and the colors she uses are so vibrant and passionate; the create such an intense feeling for every work. Additionally, her sense of space is amazing. The rooms feel so open and yet personal, and Yuskavage certainly accomplishes her goal of making the viewer feel like they are inside the painting with how realistic yet magical all of the rooms look. I really love how the rooms seem to match the personality or style of each of the characters that are present. I also think that the way she paints the paintings within the rooms is so interesting; they all contain contrasting colors with the rest of the room, and that makes them look like a window or portal within the room. The figures in Yuskavage's works are just as interesting as their surroundings. They hold so much emotion, and I think the way that she portrays the female figure is absolutely lovely; all of the paintings have a very intimate feeling, and I think that helps the viewer to connect even more with what they are seeing.
As I previously stated, Yuskavage makes her incredible work in New York and continues to be an immense influence in the world of painting.
